1. What Are Cookies

Cookies are small text files that a website saves on your device when you visit it. They are used to make the site function correctly, remember your preferences and collect information about how the site is used.

This Cookie Policy applies to the app at app.biographylibrary.org, where biographies are written and read. The app is in beta.

The institutional site biographylibrary.org may use its own tools. This page describes the app, not WordPress.

2. Hosting and Access Statistics

The website biographylibrary.org is hosted by Infomaniak SA (Switzerland). Infomaniak collects server access statistics through system logs — not through third-party tracking cookies or scripts. These logs record technical data such as anonymised IP address, pages visited, access time and browser type, exclusively for security purposes and aggregated traffic analysis.

This data remains on Swiss infrastructure and is not shared with third parties.

3. Cookies Present on the Website

The website biographylibrary.org uses exclusively necessary technical cookies. We do not use profiling cookies, advertising cookies or any third-party trackers of any kind.

3.1 Sign-in session

Account sign-in is remembered through the cookie sb-<project-reference>-auth-token, set by Supabase to recognise you; it is not used for advertising or profiling. Technical cookies like this one do not require consent, only transparency: it stays active until you sign out or the session expires automatically.

3.2 Language

The chosen language, Italian, English, French, or German, is saved in the browser’s storage, together with other local preferences: the assistant on/off switch, the last editor mode used, whether the introduction has already been seen, onboarding status, and the voice preference. They stay on your device. They are not cookies.

3.3 Echo’s voice

If you use the voice, the spoken reply is generated by a service in the European Union (France). The assistant’s writing stays in Switzerland. This is not a cookie. It is temporary, until version 1 is published to the public.

4. What We Do NOT Use

For explicit clarity:

❌ No Google Analytics or other third-party analytics
❌ No social media tracking pixels of any kind
❌ No advertising or remarketing cookies
❌ No behavioural profiling systems
❌ No cross-site tracking
❌ No tracking cookie is sent outside Switzerland. Echo’s spoken voice, if you use it, is generated in the European Union

Should we introduce traffic analytics tools in the future, we will use exclusively self-hosted solutions in Switzerland, with prior notice to users and an update to this policy.

5. Legal Basis

The technical cookies listed in this policy do not require consent, as they are strictly necessary for the website to function and to provide the service requested by the user, pursuant to Swiss nFADP law and the GDPR for European users.

As no profiling or marketing cookies are present, no cookie consent banner is shown to ordinary visitors of the public website.

6. How to Manage Cookies

You can control and delete cookies through your browser settings:

Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Cookies
Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data
Safari: Preferences → Privacy → Manage Website Data
Edge: Settings → Cookies and site permissions

Note: if you clear the browser’s storage, the language choice is lost on each visit. It is not a cookie.

7. Future Updates

The cookies and local preferences already in use are described in Section 3. We remain committed to never introducing profiling or third-party tracking cookies.

Any new technical cookie will be added here, with its name, purpose and duration, before it is used
Any substantial change will be flagged in the version history at the bottom of this policy
We will never introduce advertising, remarketing, or behavioural profiling cookies
Any future traffic-analytics tool would remain self-hosted in Switzerland, as already stated in Section 4

The platform will not use profiling or third-party tracking cookies, in line with the Non-Negotiable Principles of the Biography Library Manifesto and with the commitments stated in the Privacy Policy.
